Games I want to Play: King of the Tabletop

Designed by Tom Wham and originally published in Dragon Magazine #77, King of the Tabletop saw players taking on the roles of petty rulers trying to expand their kingdoms through force and guile. Many of the mechanics forshadowed those in Magic: The Gathering, with random land draws influencing how your kingdom grew and what sort of heroes and creatures you could "summon". A seasonal events table also made things a little more chaotic, putting players at the mercy of the elements. Woe betide the plains-heavy kingdom when "Prairie Fire" is rolled!

This game saw further life as "Kings and Things", a game with a troubled history now published by Z-Man Games, but honestly I prefer the simple design of this game. Others seem to agree, with other fans taking the original components, cleaning them up and posting them on the net, giving the game a fresh look.

King of the Tabletop is a game I want to play.
